7 signs your website is losing you customers, and how to fix each one

Most websites don't fail loudly. They just get quiet. Here are the seven leaks we find most often, in the order we'd fix them.

Nobody emails you to say they left your website. They just open the next result, message a competitor on Facebook, or decide to deal with it later. So a website that is losing customers usually doesn't look broken. It looks fine and stays quiet.

Quiet is the symptom

If people tell you they found you online but your inbox doesn't show it, or most inquiries still come through Messenger and referrals, your site is probably leaking somewhere between the search result and the contact button. These are the seven leaks we find most often in teardowns, roughly in the order we'd fix them.

1. It's slow on a phone

Most of your visitors arrive on a phone, often on mobile data. If the first screen takes more than a few seconds to appear, many of them leave before they see anything. Open your site on your own phone with Wi-Fi off and count.

Fix: compress and resize images, remove sliders and plugins you don't use, and check your hosting plan. Google's free PageSpeed Insights shows what is slowing the page down.

2. The first screen doesn't say what you do

"Welcome to our website" and "Quality you can trust" tell a visitor nothing. In the first screen, without scrolling, a stranger should know what you sell, who it's for, where you are, and what to do next.

Fix: rewrite the top of the homepage as one plain sentence about the result you deliver, one line of proof, and one obvious button.

3. Contacting you takes work

If the only way to reach you is a contact page with a long form, you lose everyone who just wanted to ask a quick question. Count the taps it takes on a phone to call, message or book you.

Fix: put a call or booking button in the header and at the end of every section, keep forms to the four or five fields you actually need, and show your phone number as text people can copy.

4. There's no proof you're real

A new visitor is asking one question: can I trust these people with my money? Stock photos of handshakes, no address and no examples of your work make the answer harder than it should be.

Fix: show real photos of your team, place and work, your address and hours, a few finished projects with details, and how your process works from first call to finished job.

5. Your form goes nowhere

We regularly find contact forms that send to an old employee's email, land in spam, or stopped working after a plugin update. The owner assumes the site just doesn't get inquiries.

Fix: send a test inquiry from your own phone today. Then do it every month, or ask whoever maintains your site to do it and tell you.

6. Google doesn't know where you are

For local businesses, the map results often matter more than the website itself. If your Google Business Profile is unclaimed, has the wrong hours, or lists a different phone number than your site, you lose people before they even reach you.

Fix: claim the profile, match your name, address and phone everywhere, and follow our Google Business Profile checklist.

7. It looks abandoned

A blog last updated in 2021, a copyright year from three years ago, or a "Christmas sale" banner in July all tell visitors the same thing: nobody is home.

Fix: remove anything dated you won't keep up, update the footer year, and set a small monthly routine for edits. If nobody on your team has time, that's what a maintenance plan is for.
